Caribbean Fairy Tale
Before officially evolving into a boutique hotel, Playa Grande Beach Club in the Dominican Republic was a private retreat reserved for its owners, their families, friends, and friends of friends. New York financier Boykin Curry, and his wife, interior designer Celerie Kemble, originally conceived the property on the island’s rugged north shore as a utopian vacation club with a diverse and vibrant community of investors. Partners in the project include architect Richard Meier, television talk show host and journalist Charlie Rose, journalist and author Fareed Zakaria, actress Mariska Hargitay, fashion designer Lela Rose, among others. The beach club sits on a mile of superb, practically undeveloped, palm-backed sand, just off the coastal main road on a remote, rain-forested stretch of the Dominican Republic’s north shore. With its transformation into an exclusive hotel, the Beach Club’s six one-bedroom ($800 per night) and three three-bedroom bungalows ($2,000 per night) can now be booked online.
