Another way to do this is with rolling industrial shelving. It can look especially nice in a minimal, modern kitchen.

Most small kitchens are in a U shape but the advantage to that is that everything is within reach and is considered one of the best working models for a cooks kitchen. I've seen many gorgeous looking, expensive, large, well-equipped kitchens where the microwave was the only appliance ever used.
