Jenni Kayne's Modern Meets Farmhouse Vibe

Jenni Kayne’s clothing line is described as comfortable yet chic, simple yet refined, sophisticated yet livable. I think her Los Angeles home, in the same neighborhood she grew up in, can be described as the same.

“In the living room, the burl-wood console and mismatched Thonet ottomans bring a lot of texture and character,” Alex says. “I love that we didn’t use a matching pair [of stools]. It helps you remember that nothing is perfect.”

The house was a blank canvas for The Studio, but Jenni had set aside a few pieces from her previous home that she thought might end up working in the space. “Jenni had a great collection of vintage leather chairs that I definitely wanted to incorporate,” Alex tells us. “We thought a supersimple slipcovered sofa in white would work well with them, and we also brought in a lot of vintage pieces to pull the look together.”To achieve a calm and chic atmosphere, Alex tells us, “layers of white and tan were the way to go. Popping those shades with modern abstract art in black and white pulled it all together.”

The design of this space was in part inspired by the living room in Jenni’s former home, which also had a lot of wood accents, white couches, and a central fireplace. “I love that everything is centered around the big fireplace,” she says. “It has a great feeling and makes you want to curl up on the couch and hang out all day and into the evening.”

“I love to decorate with natural textures, neutral colors, art, and handmade objects, and those elements are all represented in the new living room,” Jenni says. This vignette—with its sheepskin-topped wooden bench, fiddle-leaf fig tree, and original art—incorporates all her favorite things.Above a wabi-sabi-style bench, a gallery wall of small-scale art (tied together by the black frames) lies just inside the entry. Works radiate from the central spiral ink drawing by Raymond Pettibon.“The vintage Hoffmann dining chairs are so classic and chic. I love them,” Alex says. Juxtaposed with the French barn table, they “bring more texture and character to the space, without a ton of color.”Inspired by the work of French designer Christian Liaigre, Kayne sourced all the wood in the home from an Amish barn in Pennsylvania.

Pottery by Victoria Morris, William Yeoward decanters, Hermès cocktail glasses, and a photo of the Rolling Stones are just some of the items lining the bar. Kayne uses the rose gold, pewter, and brass cups (a birthday present from her mom) for serving drinks and arranging flowers.

The stools surrounding the island are by artisan woodworker Doug McCollough of DM/DM. Kayne is a self-professed Heath Ceramics addict, lining her cupboards with various styles, alongside her Royal Copenhagen and wedding china. “We use all of it,” says the expert hostess, who also runs the lifestyle blog Rip+Tan.

For anyone else, a glass-fronted fridge might seem off-putting, but for Kayne and her husband, it works with their aesthetic. “We are Virgos, so we love for everything to look perfect,” she says. “I keep out tons of Weck jars and a cake stand to put baked goods on.”

“I love a tepee,” Kayne says. “It’s so fun.” A sheepskin rug adds a cozy layer in a room where everything is kid height and floor play is a regular activity.
